Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- Optional spices: garlic cloves, peppercorns, red pepper flakes, or bay leaves
Instructions
- Peel and thinly slice the red onion using a sharp knife or an optimal veggie prep tool for uniform slices.
- In a small saucepan, combine vinegar, water, sugar, and salt. Bring to a gentle simmer and stir until the sugar and salt are fully dissolved. Add optional spices like garlic or peppercorns for extra flavor.
- Transfer the sliced onions into a clean jar or container. Pour the hot brine over the onions ensuring they are fully submerged. Seal the jar tightly.
- Allow the onions to marinate at room temperature for at least 30 minutes for quick pickling, or refrigerate and marinate for at least 2 hours for more flavor. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Ensure all utensils and jars are clean to prevent contamination and prolong freshness.
- Use any variety of vinegar like balsamic or lemon juice for different flavor profiles.
- Add herbs such as dill or thyme for additional aroma and flavor.
